Adding a new-generation camera to an older Gigamedia NVR (2021 to 2025)

Important

New-generation Gigamedia cameras should not be mixed natively with older Gigamedia NVRs from 2021 to 2025.

In this case, integration is possible by ONVIF only.

Before you start

• The camera cannot be added using the automatic/proprietary method.
• Integration must be done using the ONVIF protocol only.
• The camera must be activated first.
• Activation must be completed through the camera web interface, using a PC.
• During this step, you must create the camera administrator password.

Requirements

Before installation, make sure you have:

• 1 new-generation Gigamedia camera
• 1 older Gigamedia NVR (2021 to 2025 range)
• 1 PC connected to the same network
• 1 network cable
• Camera power supply:
  • through compatible PoE, or
  • through a suitable power supply depending on the model

Step 1: connect the camera to the network

1. Connect the camera to the network.
2. Make sure the PC is on the same network as the camera.
3. Power on the camera.
4. Wait until the camera has fully started.

Step 2: activate the camera from a PC

Activation is mandatory before adding the camera to the NVR.

1. From the PC, open a web browser.
2. Enter the camera IP address.
3. At first login, the camera will request activation.
4. Create the administrator password.
5. Keep this password safe, as it will be required when adding the camera to the NVR.

Password recommendations

Choose a password that is:

• long enough,
• includes uppercase and lowercase letters,
• includes numbers,
• includes special characters if required.

Step 3: check access to the camera interface

After activation:

1. Log in again to the camera web interface.
2. Make sure the live video is displayed correctly.
3. Check that the ONVIF service is available, if this setting is shown in the menu.
4. Confirm the camera IP address.

Step 4: add the camera to the NVR using ONVIF

Once the camera has been activated, it must be added manually to the older NVR.

1. Log in to the NVR menu.
2. Open the camera management section.
3. Select manual add.
4. Choose the ONVIF protocol.
5. Enter the following information:
   • camera IP address,
   • ONVIF port if required,
   • camera username,
   • password created during activation.
6. Confirm the settings.
7. Check that the image appears on the NVR.

Possible limitations with ONVIF

ONVIF integration provides compatibility, but some features may be limited.

Depending on the model, some functions may be unavailable or partially supported:

• smart events,
• AI features,
• metadata,
• advanced detection functions,
• full camera settings from the NVR,
• audio or alarm functions in some cases.

Gigamedia recommendation

For a stable installation and full compatibility, Gigamedia recommends keeping the system consistent:

• either a complete older range system,
• or a complete new-generation range system.

Mixing generations should only be considered as a compatibility solution, using ONVIF only.

Quick troubleshooting

The camera does not appear on the NVR

Check that:

• the camera has been activated,
• the password has been created,
• the IP address is correct,
• the selected protocol is ONVIF,
• the PC, camera, and NVR are all on the correct network.

No image is displayed

Check:

• the entered username and password,
• the administrator password,
• the ONVIF port if required,
• the network connection,
• the PoE or local power supply.

Smart functions are not available

This is normal in most cases:

• the older NVR uses the camera through generic ONVIF compatibility,
• advanced features are not guaranteed.

Conclusion
